What pricing property series in gold shows
A house is the largest purchase most people make, and its price is nearly always discussed in the local currency. Priced in gold, the same house can tell a different story: prices that rose for years in dollars or euros can be flat or falling when counted in ounces.
Two kinds of series are listed. The median sales price of houses sold in the United States is a price, so it is stated as ounces of gold per house. The residential property price indices of other countries are index numbers without a unit. They are divided by the gold price and set to 100 at their first value, so they show the direction of property prices in gold, not an amount.
These series are published per quarter and with a delay of several months. Each value is priced with the average gold price of its own quarter, and the page of each series names the quarter its latest value belongs to.
