What pricing gold mining stocks in gold shows
A gold mining company sells gold, so its share price is often expected to follow the metal. It does not do so reliably. A miner has costs for energy, labour, and equipment, it carries debt, and it depends on the mines it owns and the countries they are in. Priced in gold, a mining share shows whether the company added anything to the metal it digs up.
When a mining share gains against gold, it rose more than the metal did. When it loses against gold, holding the metal would have been the better choice, even if the share price rose in dollars. Royalty and streaming companies are listed with the miners, as are two funds that hold many mining shares at once.
Mining shares tend to move more than gold in both directions. The one-year figures in this group are therefore larger than in most others, and a single year says little about a company.
