What pricing commodities in gold shows
Commodities are the oldest things to be priced in gold. How many ounces of silver, barrels of oil, or bushels of wheat one ounce of gold buys was a common way to state prices long before today's currencies existed. These ratios remove the currency from the comparison and leave two physical goods.
The prices here are futures prices, as the exchanges quote them: per troy ounce for the precious metals, per pound for copper and coffee, per barrel for oil, per bushel for grains. The gold and silver ratio is the best known of them and has its own place on the home page.
A commodity that falls against gold has become cheaper for someone who holds gold, whatever its price in dollars did.
