Sorted by major currencies first.

Prices per troy ounce in each currency's own units, as of 30 October 2026. The percentages are the change of that price: a rising gold price means the currency buys less gold. Each currency has its own page with the price per gram, the currency's change in gold, and the full history.

How the figures are calculated

The gold price in US dollars per troy ounce is multiplied by each currency's exchange rate against the US dollar on the same day. Prices and exchange rates come from Yahoo Finance.

The percentages in the table are the change of the gold price in each currency. A currency's change in gold follows from the same prices: when an ounce of gold costs twice as much in a currency as before, a change of +100%, one unit of that currency buys half as much gold, a change of −50%.

Questions about currencies and gold

How much does an ounce of gold cost in euros, pounds, and yen?

On 30 October 2026 one troy ounce of gold cost 3,492 euros, 2,911 British pounds, and 614,151 Japanese yen.

Which major currency lost the most value against gold over ten years?

Of the 20 currencies on this page, the Turkish lira lost the most: one unit buys 98% less gold than ten years earlier, as of 30 October 2026. The Swiss franc held up best: one unit buys 60.7% less gold.

How is the gold price in a currency calculated?

The gold price in US dollars per troy ounce is multiplied by the exchange rate of the currency against the US dollar on the same day. Both come from Yahoo Finance. The US dollar price is the price of the nearest gold futures contract.

What does a currency's change in gold mean?

It is the change in the amount of gold one unit of the currency buys. If an ounce of gold costs twice as much in a currency as it did ten years earlier, one unit of that currency buys half as much gold, and the change is −50%.

Why compare currencies against gold instead of against each other?

An exchange rate only shows one currency relative to another, so two currencies that lose value at the same pace look stable against each other. Pricing each of them in gold measures both against the same asset, one that no central bank issues.
