Home prices around the world, in gold

What a square metre of home costs in grams of gold in each country, and how home prices have moved against gold.

In June 2026 the median asking price was highest in Hong Kong 140 g, United Kingdom 44 g, Austria 38 g, Taiwan 36 g, and lowest in Nigeria 2.3 g and South Africa 3.8 g (62 countries; gold at US$ 4,228 an ounce). Asking prices of listed homes, not what homes sold for.

Five shades, each holding about the same number of countries (12 of 62); the numbers show where a shade begins, in grams of gold per square metre. A shade tells the order, not the size of the gap: the dearest, 140 g, is in the top shade with the next few, and the ranking shows the amounts.

Home prices against gold over ten years

None of the 50 economies with a series saw home prices rise against gold over ten years; The BIS publishes a house price series for 57 economies, most of them advanced economies and a few large emerging ones; 50 have a value at both ends of this period. Countries without a series are hatched, and nothing is estimated for them.

What the figures are

What a price per square metre is

The median asking price per square metre of the homes for sale that Untera collected in June 2026, from 2,797,176 listings in 62 countries; each country needs at least 300 listings. It is what sellers ask, not what buyers paid, and the sample is the listings of Untera's sources, not every home.

Untera converts to US dollars at the exchange rate of the day. This page divides by the World Bank's mean gold price of June 2026 (US$ 4,228 an ounce) to get grams of gold, so every country is compared at one gold price; grams = dollars × 31.1034768 ÷ the price of an ounce. “Gold for a 70 m² home” multiplies the grams by 70 as an illustration; it is the same size everywhere and not the typical home of a country.

How far to trust a comparison

Untera itself lists the limits: list prices typically sit above final sale prices and vary by market; the sample reflects what is listed online, which over-represents cities and liquid markets; the mix of flats and houses differs by country; and countries with few listings are indicative only. Here those under 2,000 listings (Bangladesh, Honduras, Japan, Slovakia, South Korea, Uruguay) carry a star. Japan and Italy are shown as Untera gives them; their medians cover all the listings of a country, which probably include many rural houses, so they read low beside the price of a flat in Tokyo or Milan.

Official figures on this site for the countries with their own page use other definitions, so their level can differ from this map without either being wrong.

What a home price change in gold is

The Bank for International Settlements publishes, for 57 economies, an index of residential property prices in the country's own currency. Divided by the average exchange rate of the quarter (BIS) it gives the price in US dollars; divided again by the quarter's gold price (World Bank, monthly means) it gives the price in gold. The map shows the change of that index between two quarters. It does not show what a home costs: the indexes of different countries have different baselines, so levels cannot be compared, only changes.

The colours are the scale of the site's housing maps: gold or dollar blue for a rise, graphite for a fall, grey for no change, hatching for no series.

Which countries are missing

Countries that a source does not cover are hatched and nothing is estimated for them: Switzerland, the Netherlands, Norway, Singapore and Australia are not in the price index, and large parts of Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia have neither a price nor an index.

Questions about home prices in gold

Where are homes most expensive when measured in gold?

In June 2026 the median asking price per square metre was highest in Hong Kong (140 g of gold, US$ 18,994), United Kingdom (44 g of gold, US$ 6,019), Austria (38 g of gold, US$ 5,133), of the 62 countries in Untera's index; gold was valued at US$ 4,228 an ounce, the World Bank's mean for that month.

How many grams of gold does a square metre of home cost?

Germany: 30 g (US$ 4,143); United States: 18 g (US$ 2,475); Türkiye: 9.0 g (US$ 1,230). The median asking price per square metre of June 2026, divided by the gold price of that month.

Have home prices risen against gold?

Over ten years to Q2 2026, home prices measured in gold rose in 0 of the 50 economies with a series from the Bank for International Settlements; measured in US dollars they rose in 46 of 50. The change is that of each economy's own index, so it can be compared across economies, while the level cannot.

Are these prices what homes sold for?

No. They are asking prices: the median price per square metre of the homes that sellers listed online in the month, from Untera's index. List prices typically sit above sale prices and the listings over-represent cities, so a figure is a guide to where homes are dear, not an appraisal. A country with fewer than 2,000 listings is marked as indicative.

Which countries are missing from the map?

Untera's index covers 62 countries; the BIS publishes house price changes for 57 economies. A country that a source does not cover is hatched on the map, and nothing is estimated for it. Switzerland, the Netherlands, Norway, Singapore and Australia, for example, are not in the price index.
