# Gold Standard > Gold Standard measures assets, currencies, and economies in gold instead of in a currency. The home page shows the current gold price and four gold ratios with up to 25 years of daily history. Prices come from Yahoo Finance and refresh every five minutes. Gold is quoted per troy ounce. Every ratio is oriented so that its value is greater than one. The site is for information only and is not investment advice. ## Ratios - Gold silver ratio: stated as "1 oz gold = N oz silver". The price of one troy ounce of gold divided by the price of one troy ounce of silver. How many ounces of silver one ounce of gold buys. A high number means silver is cheap relative to gold, which has often happened in times of stress. A low number means silver has caught up. - S&P 500 in gold: stated as "1 S&P 500 = N oz gold". The S&P 500 index level divided by the price of one troy ounce of gold. How many ounces of gold it takes to buy one unit of the S&P 500 index. It strips the dollar out of the stock market: when it falls, stocks are losing value against gold even if their dollar price is rising. - Gold copper ratio: stated as "1 oz gold = N lb copper". The price of one troy ounce of gold divided by the price of one pound of copper. How many pounds of copper one ounce of gold buys. Copper follows industrial demand and gold follows caution, so a rising ratio tends to go with a weakening economy and a falling one with growth. - Bitcoin gold ratio: stated as "1 bitcoin = N oz gold". The price of one bitcoin divided by the price of one troy ounce of gold. How many ounces of gold one bitcoin buys. It compares the newest store of value with the oldest, without any currency in between. Each ratio also has a typical range: the 25th to 75th percentile of its full daily history. ## Data - [Current gold price and ratios (JSON)](https://gold-standard.org/gold-ratios.json): gold price in USD, the four ratio values with units, typical ranges, and the time they refer to. Missing observations are omitted, never filled with a different period. Gold is measured in tonnes for reserves and deposits, grams for the basket, grams per square metre for housing, and grams per S$100 for the currency. The reserve market value is Gold Standard's estimate; MAS's book value determines the official reserve share. Historical SGD/USD rates use Federal Reserve DEXSIUS from January 1981 before Yahoo SGD=X starts in December 2003. Gold observations start in August 2000 (GC=F). USD and gold histories can have different start dates. The basket and S$100 gold lines go back to January 1981, and the household gold buying power to 1995 Q1 as an approximation of the quarter-end close, using monthly means from the World Bank Commodity Price Data (Pink Sheet), CC BY 4.0, converted by Gold Standard; before June 2025 that series is the London afternoon fixing, not published or endorsed by LBMA or ICE Benchmark Administration, and the World Bank does not endorse this site.
