BATAVIA — Close, but no cigar for the Batavia boys’ basketball team on Tuesday night, as the Blue Devils fell to longtime rival, Pittsford Sutherland, 60-58, in a thriller at Batavia High School.
Trailing by seven entering the fourth quarter, the Blue Devils blitzed the Knights, forging a 7-0 run as Carter McFollins-Cramer and Mikey McKenzie each knocked down 3-pointers, then McFollins added a rebound, putback to provide Batavia with a 54-53 advantage with 6:15 to play. The quick Blue Devils’ spurt was answered immediately by Sutherland, which went on a 5-0 run of its own to regain a 58-54 advantage with 4:30 to play.
Minutes later, a transition layup from Batavia’s Sawyer Siverling evened the score at 58-all with 1:40 to go. A minute would pass before a Knights’ possession was extended due to a questionable jump ball call, as McKenzie reached in to pull the ball away from a Sutherland player, but the ref offered a quick whistle and the jump-ball call, with the possession arrow pointing in the Knights’ direction. Seconds later, a rebound, putback from Maximus Michalski pushed Sutherland in front by two before Batavia turned the ball over on its ensuing possession. The Knights ran out the clock after a couple of Blue Devils’ fouls on the other end to secure the slim win.
Siverling paced the Batavia offense with 16 points, while McFollins, McKenzie, Rashawd Christie and Estavon Lovett each added seven points. Chandler Reynolds and Michalski each recorded a game-high 17 points for the Knights (3-2).
