BATAVIA — A man convicted last week of sex crimes against children is now facing eve more charges.
Melvin A. Huntley, 41, of Wilkinson Road in Batavia was charged Tuesday after being caught Nov. 16 with contraband inside the facility.
“During a security search, he was found with an illegal substance,” said Sheriff William Sheron.
The substance was caught during a routine security search of the facility, Sheron said. He declined to give further details and said the investigation is continuing.
Huntley is now charged with first-degree promoting prison contraband, second-degree promoting prison contraband and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. He was arraigned and returned to jail pending a Jan. 3 City Court appearance.
The charges will likely be a minor footnote to Hutley’s existing conviction.
Huntley is facing up to life in prison after being found guilty of predatory sexual assault for repeatedly raping children.
He was convicted Dec. 6 by a jury of three counts of predatory sexual assault against a child, two counts of first-degree rape, five counts of first-degree sexual abuse, two counts of third-degree sexual abuse and four counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
He was found not guilty of five other charges of first-degree sexual abuse, third-degree sexual abuse and second-degree rape.
Huntley was first arrested in July 2021 after a Genesee County sheriff’s investigation allegedly revealed he sexually assaulted a child under 11 from September 2014 to September 2019.
Further investigation revealed three more victims, all under 17 and all involving repeated acts of sexual assault.
Huntley will remain in Genesee County Jail without bail pending sentencing Jan. 11.
